Camosun Chargers hosting 2023 PACWEST Basketball Championships

The Camosun Chargers basketball teams are excited to welcome competitors and fans to the capital city for the 2023 Pacific Western Athletic Association (PACWEST) Basketball Championships, March 2 – 4, 2023 at the Pacific Institute for Sport Education

The tournament will see the top 12 teams, six women’s and six men’s, compete to claim their berth to the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) National Championships. The winner of the women’s PACWEST Championship will advance to nationals at Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ontario. Based on a national point ranking system, the top two men’s basketball teams will advance to the big stage at SAIT in Calgary, Alberta. Both CCAA Basketball Championships take place March 15 – 18, 2023.

Tournament passes are available for purchase online or via the . General adult passes are just $30, Seniors, Camosun staff and faculty are $20, and free for Camosun students (with student ID). This includes all 12 games over the three-day tournament.

The PACWEST men’s basketball standings are coming down to the final games this month to determine seeding for the provincial championship, and the competition is tight. The Chargers currently sit in a three-way tie for second with Capilano and Douglas at 14 points, while Vancouver Island University (VIU) leads the league with 24.

The Chargers women’s basketball team are sitting in the middle of the pack tied with Okanagan at 10 points with a handful of games remaining. Douglas sits ahead of the them by eight points and Langara behind with only four points on the season. Both Chargers teams have six games remaining, including four home games.

The Camosun Chargers Athletics Program currently fields teams in basketball and volleyball. Since joining the Canadian Collegiate Athletics Association (CCAA) and PACWEST conferences in 1994, the Chargers have competed in over 100 national and provincial championships with over 50 medal winning finishes.
